On 5th January 2010, Acts Church officially launched the inaugural research initiative by the Young Working Adults (YWAs) of Acts, Project U. The project, notably the first amongst its kind in Malaysia, aims to understand the heart and challenges of YWAs and their views towards church, particularly those who have once been regular or have attended church before.
In casting the vision for this initiative, Rev Kenneth Chin, Senior Minister of Acts Church shared about the purpose and objective behind it – to establish Acts as a place for everyone, including YWAs, along the lines of the following C’s:
- CARE – Acts be known as a place where YWAs can care and be cared for.
- CELEBRATE – We celebrate our individuality and differences and are able to express it in a way that is relevant to and as YWAs.
- CHALLENGE – A ministry that challenges the heart to live for more of God and not live in regret.
- CHANGE – In every ministry, there must be change that follows, even if it means being just a little more aware.
He also shared from James 5:19-20 and emphasized that Project U could very well be the beginning of stopping an ‘epidemic’ of people turning away from God. It is important to go back to the basics, to the message of love, as the heart of the problem is the problem of the heart and only love can truly change people and make the difference.
Pastor Alex Tan, Young Adults Pastor of Acts Church, explained that the “U” in Project U could stand for many things but if there is one thing the U stands for, it is the word “understand”. Project U seeks to understand and to hear the heart and thoughts of the “unchurched” (another U).
This 4-month project will require involvement from every YWA in Acts Church to interview (speak to various shortlisted candidates to ask questions and hear their point of view), intercede (pray for everyone who is involved in the project, especially on Tuesdays) and/or introduce (bring up names of friends who may fit into the requirements of a research interviewee).
The research findings from Project U over a period of time will be analyzed, documented and compiled into a book to provide better understanding to churches in order to better understand and care for an age group that is suffering and needs to be touched by and for God.
The Project U team is headed by Pastor Alex and consists of close to 30 YWA-interviewers supported by a strong administrative team.
During the launch, Project U magnets were given out as a token to allow YWAs present that night to remember to pray as well as involve themselves with the project. Lanyards were also given out to the Interviewers to be worn as they are sent out for interviews.
Pr Kenneth prayed for the project team as well as challenged every YWA who would desire to do something significant to reach this generation in 2010. Everyone in the crowd stood up that night, responding to a call to do something for their generation in 2010! Action will now follow that commitment.
The end result of Project U would be CHANGE; change that has begun in and with the YWAs of Acts.
